About The Saskatoon Hair Loss Clinic

Physicians, Surgeons and Dermatologists

A Collaborative, Evidence-Based Approach to Hair & Scalp Concerns

Virtual integrative support for patients across Canada

Hair and scalp concerns are rarely isolated cosmetic issues. They are often driven by systemic factors—nutritional deficiencies, gut dysfunction, hormonal imbalance, chronic inflammation, stress physiology, and medication effects—that fall outside the scope of a typical medical visit.

My role is to support patients alongside medical care, not to replace it.

Who I Am

I am Jennifer Polly McCowan, a certified clinical Trichologist, Integrative Health Practitioner, and Gut Health Specialist with lived and clinical experience in complex hair and scalp disorders.

I am currently enrolled in the Evidence-Based Hair Fellowship (EBHF) under Dr. Jeff Donovan, a rigorous program grounded in dermatologic evidence, diagnostic clarity, and appropriate medical referral. Only a small number of practitioners complete this fellowship.

My work is trauma-informed, evidence-based, and designed to complement—not compete with—medical care.

What I Do (and What I Don’t)

I DO:

  • Provide in-depth virtual consultations for hair and scalp concerns

  • Assess systemic contributors to hair loss and scalp health
(nutrition, micronutrients, gut health, inflammation, hormones, stress)

  • Support patient education, adherence, and expectations

  • Offer long-term monitoring and non-medical care

  • Refer patients back to physicians or dermatology when red flags arise

I DO NOT:

  • Diagnose medical conditions

  • Replace dermatologic or primary care

  • Treat active scalp disease remotely

  • Prescribe medications

Clear scope boundaries are central to my practice.

Why Physicians Refer

1. Time Relief

Hair loss discussions are time-intensive and emotionally complex. I handle the deep dives so you don’t have to.

2. Better Patient Satisfaction

Patients who feel educated and supported are less likely to rebook frustrated visits or seek multiple opinions.

3. Improved Outcomes

When systemic drivers are addressed, medical treatments work better and compliance improves.

4. Clean Boundaries

Virtual care allows for national access without geographic overlap, liability confusion, or competition with in-clinic services

5. The Best Clients to Refer

  • Chronic or unexplained hair shedding

  • Telogen effluvium (stress-, illness-, or postpartum-related)

  • Hair loss with nutritional, gut, or lifestyle contributors

  • Patients dissatisfied with “minoxidil or nothing”

  • Pre- or post-procedural hair support (e.g., transplant optimization)

  • Rural or remote patients with limited access to specialty care

How the Referral Works

  1. You identify a patient who would benefit from non-medical, integrative support

  2. You offer them my information as a supplementary resource

  3. The patient books a virtual consultation

  4. I manage education, lifestyle, and systemic contributors

  5. Any medical red flags are referred back promptly

I am happy to provide:

  • A one-page referral handout for your clinic

  • EMR-friendly referral language

  • Clear escalation pathways back to medical care

A Shared Goal

My goal is simple:
To help patients feel supported while reducing the burden on medical practices.

Hair loss may show up on the scalp—but it rarely starts there.
